now investigators say they are trying to figure out what prompted jovan belcher to murder his girlfriend before taking his own life. police say that jovan belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, kasandra perkins, on sunday morning before heading to the chiefs stadium where he killed himself in front of his head coach and others. the chiefs have any moment of silence before their game yesterday to remember all the victims of domestic violence. not specifically naming jovan belcher, but certainly a lot of questions. steve brown has more in chicago with this. we heard a little bit of the 911 call before the break. how do those final moments play out at arrowhead stadium earlier on saturday morning? reporter: yes, let's put that into context. kasandra perkins was shot numerous times and fatally wounded by the father of their child. that is jovan belcher, who drove to arrowhead stadium, essentially to talk to two people. that would be head coach and general manager. neither of those two gentlemen have commented on how those final seconds played out. but police officer that was watc

that the chiefs linebacker, joe van belcher, shot his 22-year-old girlfriend dead, drove to arrowhead stadium and shot himself in front of his coach and general manager. elizabeth prann is live in atlanta with more. elizabeth? >> gregg, he reportedly thanked his general manager and coach for all they had done for him before he reportedly turned the gun and killed himself right outside the training facility near arrowhead stadium. about an hour before happened, police say belcher shot his girlfriend, the mother of their child, repeatedly at a home just miles from the stadium. the police have not released the identity of his girlfriend, nor have they confirmed that the woman's mother and the couple's child were home at the time of the shooting. the second shooting caused the whole chiefs facility to go on lockdown and the community is digesting what happened. here is the city mayor. >> i'm here, you're here. we're all here because a young man in a high profile position, for whatever reason, felt that the end of the world had come and he had to act in the way that he did. god bless his soul and

. this weekend kansas city chief player jovan belcher killed his girlfriend, the mother of his child, and then drove to the chiefs stadium and shot himself to death right in front of his coaches. to be clear, we do not know the causes or the reasons behind this tragedy, but we have seen six nfl players take their own lives in as many years. studies have shown that some of these players have something called cte, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. it's like an alzheimer's type of position attributed to repeated head injuries. our senior cnn medical correspondent elizabeth cohen has been looking into this story, and there are -- there's more information. it's incredibly coincidental, but there's more information coming out about head trauma and repeated head trauma and how this can effect the brains of pro athletes. give me a bit of a feel for what these studies are saying. >> there's one big study that is just coming out today and is done at boston university, and people have looked at brains of athletes who have had this condition after they died, done an autopsy. sort of here and the

jovan belcher killed his girlfriend an then drove to the kansas city chiefs stadium and killed himself in front of his coaches. let me be clear. we don't know the causes or reasons the reasons behind this tragedy in particular, but we have seen a large number of nfl players take their own lives over the last few years. studies have shown that some of these swidz can be attributed to something called cte. it's chronic traumatic encephalopathy. it's attributed to alzheimer's. some are attributing it to concussion-like injuries. there's new information out, a new study that's making a lot of news. what is in the study, and why is it significant especially in light of what we've just seen happen over the weekend? >> researchers, ashleigh, have been so curious to know what do the brains of these athletes with chronic -- it's the biggest study. it's the largest mof people. they looked at 68 brains on autopsy of people who died and had chronic traumatic encephalopattie. most were athletes. i think this is really going to explain what they found. the three brains on the left are normal brains.
